Monday, January 16, 2012   Winter's Finally Here

Well, it's true. Winter has finally arrived in Goderich and Huron County... And it's definitely more like a lamb than a lion this season!

I know we're all used to eight foot tall snow banks and keeping an eye out for snowmobilers crossing the highways... but I can't help to feel like that won't be happening this year. As a born and raised city girl, I vividly remember the first time I saw a flock of snowmobilers bomb through the parking lot here at 300 Suncoast Drive. I actually had no idea that people even did that! Of course, now I know they're not supposed to do that but it never stopped me from feeling like an outsider when I saw these people fly by on their machines.

Of course, that all changed last year when I mentioned on-air that I had never even been on a snowmobile. One of our listeners came in and offered to take me out on the trails. Honestly, only in Huron County! Of course I agreed without hesitation and got Ally on board as well. So Sid Bruinsma (who helps run the local snowmobile club and maintains the trails) taught us the basics and took us out for an afternoon... and let me just tell you that it was amazing. An all around amazing experience, thanks to the generosity of Sid and a few of his pals who lent us their machines and helped us cross the highways!

So I've been a bit bummed out this winter because there's been little to no snow and the trails aren't even open yet. I'm hoping for more snow soon, but let's be honest... none of us want to be shoveling our driveways in June!

Friday, December 23, 2011   Christmas Eve's Eve!

That's right, we're just TWO days away from Christmas! We're very excited here at the Beach and we've had our decorations up for practically the entire month so far.

We had a pretty busy morning here, with Goderich Mayor Deb Shewfelt popping in as our guest host between eight and nine o'clock. He talked a bit about the upcoming planning charrette, which is a chance for everybody to give their opinion and ideas on the future of Goderich. He also gave some pretty awesome tips on how to roast a Turkey -- he told us he's been doing it for decades!

Ally and I also got the chance to talk about the top toys from the last 30 years, which has been compiled into a list for you all! These are the best selling toys from 1981 to 2010, with the top three contenders for 2011.

(list from http://www.ultimatecoupons.com/blog/2011/12/30-years-of-elf-handiwork-the-most-popular-toys-since-1981-infographic/)

I definitely remember taking my original brick of a GameBoy everywhere with me when I was a kid. Couldn't get enough Tetris! My grandparents also searched high and low to get me an original Tickle Me Elmo (which I still have!) and I begged my parents for a Tamagotchi.

It's pretty interesting to see the shift in gifts as technology has become easily accessible to most people and how kids have gotten used to modern gifts.

Anyways, I'll be heading home to London for the holidays this year and spending some time in Bayfield as well. I hope everyone has a lovely holiday break and a fantastic Christmas to boot! Merry Christmas to you and yours (and keep your fingers crossed for a bit of snow on Sunday morning!).

Monday, December 12, 2011   All About Trees

As you may have heard this morning, Ally and I want to know all about your Christmas Tree habits! Do you prefer a real tree or a fake one?

Ally's all over the fake tree and even keeps one up year-round with her sister! I personally am a fan of the real tree but have a small fake one that I put up every year.

My parents went with a fake tree years ago and have never looked back, even though I complain about it every year.

Send us an email at thebeach@1049thebeach.ca or give us a call at 519-612-1049 to let us know what your tree preference is!
