Breakfast on the Beach
Wednesday, September 1, 2010
For the Record...(WIRED) Music lovers can now be immortalised when they die by having their ashes baked into vinyl records to leave behind for loved ones.
A U.K. company called And Vinyly is offering people the chance to press their ashes in a vinyl recording of their own voice, their favourite tunes or their last will and testament. Minimalist audiophiles might want to go for the simple option of having no tunes or voiceover, and simply pressing the ashes into the vinyl to result in pops and crackles.
The company was founded by Jason Leach, who co-founded the techno group and record label Subhead in the 1990's and has since founded a number of other labels.
Leach explained to Wired.co.uk that there were a number of factors that made him launch the service, including thinking that he was “getting a bit old” and “might not be invincible”. His mother also started working at a mortuary, which brought the whole funeral process closer to home. A third factor was when he saw a TV program that showed someone in America putting their ashes into fireworks, which made him think about how he might want to be remembered. And, Leach says, “It’s a bit more interesting than being in a pot on a shelf.”

6 Tips to a Better Family Photo
It's summer on Ontario's West Coast and the time is right to capture some great pictures. How do you go about getting the perfect pic? These 6 tips should help:
1. Always be prepared:
- Have your camera with you at all times (with charged batteries and empty memory cards). You never know when those "special moments" will happen!
2. Make a date with your camera:
- We don't mean taking it for dinner and a movie. Just set some time aside to go over the manual and the camera. Read and practice.
3. Find the light:
- Photography is all about lighting. If you want to avoid shadows, make sure there's no bright sunbeams directly on your subject. Find some open shade when you're outdoors and this will make a world of difference.
4. Take time to focus:
- Whether you've got a "point & shoot" or a DSLR, you have to take time to focus your image. Push the shutter button half-way and let the camera do its thing. Once you're happy, push the button the rest of the way and wait until you hear the click.
5. Think outside the box:
- Instead of making your subject move, YOU move! Get lots of different angles once you have found the best light and snap lots of shots. Sometimes an off-center image is more intriguing than a straight-on shot.
6. Variety is important:
- When you look back at your images, you want to remember all the little details. So add some variety to your shots and they all won't look the same when you look back on your pictures later on.
Happy snapping! :)
How long should you keep old food around? If you're getting set to make your regular weekend trips to the cottage, here's a handy guide to what you can keep and what you can't:
1. Fresh meat:
- Fish, beef, pork, and poultry - won't last longer than two days in your fridge (If it smells bad, it is bad!)
2. Soft and stinky cheeses:
- Cottage cheese, cream cheese, blue cheese, Camembert, and feta - should be eaten within a week. Hard cheeses like cheddar and parmesan will stay fresh for up to two months
3. Condiments:
- Ketchup (8 to 12 months), Mayo (up to 6 months) Relish (about a year), Mustard (up to 8 months) Salad dressing (up to 9 months), Butter (up to a year when refrigerated), Syrup (about a year)
4. Cooked vegetables and grains: Three to seven days
- Rice: throw it out after seven days in the fridge.
5. Alcohol:
- Beers, on average last about three months...Microbrews (not as long)
- Unopened white wine can turn sour within a year, while red wine - if stored in a cool, dark place - can last for decades
- Spirits such as rum, gin, vodka, whisky, and brandy have no expiration date.
6. Canned foods:
- Contrary to what you might think, canned foods don't last forever. Open it up & if it smells sour, toss it.
7. Frozen foods:
- Ice cream and sorbet have the shortest life spans of any frozen food, a whole chicken or turkey will stay fresh for up to a year, frozen veggies are good for three months, bread will last three months as well, ground beef can last up to four months
